cowboymatt329: Dear Lord,
cowboymatt329: Please bless this time that we have together to study Your Word. Please open up our ears to hear Your message.
Thank you for sending your Son to save us, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen

cowboymatt329: Okay...1 Corinthians 3...
cowboymatt329: Does anyone have anything to share or anything they wanted to disuss from the chapter?
Ketman777: I think it's interesting that, if translitered into the Hebrew, the word for the "house" being built
is "hiekal hakoddesh"
Ketman777: Basically - "Holy Temple"
Ketman777: It was used in Hebrew literature for the actual, literal temple in Jerusalem...which, at that time, was still
standing. Consider the consequence of that statement there...
cowboymatt329: Hmm...that it is interesting...
crosskritters: is this the verse that people point to when arguing about defacing ones body with tatoos and the like?
Ketman777: heikal hakoddesh is transliterated throughout
Ketman777: So the whole gist of the passage, as it were, is that the collective church is being built up as the Temple
of God
Ketman777: that's the concept of "The Holy Temple" - God's sanctuary
cowboymatt329: Right, so the passage is not necessarily referring to individual people, but the "body of Christ?"
crosskritters: that makes sense
Ketman777: That's the contextual sense of it..
Ketman777: Think about it, the preceding chapters talk about the divisions and Chap. 3 opens with that - Apollos, Paul,
etc...
cowboymatt329: right...
Ketman777: I guess you could say Paul is trying to get the idea of how individuals should grow into the community of Christ
cowboymatt329: right
crosskritters: mmhmm
cowboymatt329: And that would seem to be supported by the fact that "you" in verses 16-17 is plural...
cowboymatt329: okay...anything else on this?
crosskritters: it's kinda interesting the analogy of a garden
bwbrock2 has entered the room.
crosskritters: goes back to teh parable of the sower
cowboymatt329: right...
crosskritters: even though God makes everything grow
crosskritters: planting and watering are still important
crosskritters: havest is ripe workers are few...that kinda thing
Ketman777: absolutely...take it a little further though...who caled Paul and Apollos?
tiggerish44: sound like a garderns best freind
Ketman777: called*
crosskritters: God?
Ketman777: exactly...
Ketman777: so we have God from beginning to end in the process
tiggerish44: gardener
tiggerish44: *
crosskritters: but us humans aren't always looking for the call of God unfortunatly
cowboymatt329: right...
cowboymatt329: So, basically...
cowboymatt329: what we see from this passage and parable of the sower...
cowboymatt329: is that God is ultimately responsible for the creation of the sower and his ability to sow seed. Of course,
God is even responsible for the seed...it is an interesting thing to think about...
cowboymatt329: especially when dealing with pride, etc.
crosskritters: an interesting point
crosskritters: when a person isn't planting the seeds, where do they come from?
cowboymatt329: the seeds?
crosskritters: yes
crosskritters: they come from the kind of plant that they grow into
crosskritters: so if we are healthy trees
crosskritters: we should be spreading seeds
crosskritters: no?
Ketman777: To some extent....
cowboymatt329: In the case of the parable, I would consider the seeds to be the Word of God...Therefore, the seeds come
from God, just like seeds come from the tree....
Ketman777: I think there is a point where ALL analogies in Scripture can and will break down
Ketman777: but only when you take them too far
crosskritters: true
Ketman777: I agree with the principle, I'm just not sure that we can apply that from the passage given that it is talking
about the unity of the church and growing together in Christ.
crosskritters: I'm taking it from the passage of the sower
crosskritters: but yes, I see what you're saying
cowboymatt329: Alright, anymore on this little passage and the sower passage?
AcidRainLiTE has entered the room.
AcidRainLiTE has left the room.
cowboymatt329: I guess so...
cowboymatt329: moving on really quick...
cowboymatt329: to verse 18...
cowboymatt329: I've heard mutiple views on this passage where it talks about "becoming foolish." I have my own
position on this, but was going to see if everyone agreed...what does it mean to "become foolish, to become wise."
WackyWabbit25 has left the room.
cowboymatt329: *?
Ketman777: I think it's important to remember that Paul was a Pharissee and a rabbi - even as an Apostle....
Ketman777: the Jewish understanding here (and I'm not saying that it's the Gospel truth, exactly), is that one should
not presume to be "chacham" - a term that is used of the greatest teachers
Ketman777: I think this lines up nicely with James, which says that "not many of you should presume to be teachers
(chachamaim) my brothers..."
bwbrock2: what I find annoying is when a Christian says
bwbrock2: something that is patently illogical then hides behind this verse.
Ketman777: That is *definitely* annoying...
genjoshua06 has left the room.
bwbrock2: I think the verse is just calling us to a deep humility.
crosskritters: indeed
cowboymatt329: right...
crosskritters: also I think it's also important to lay aside presumtions when studying God's word or listening to his
voice
Ketman777: I must dissent on that...
bwbrock2: I think it may also be applied to nonChristians who think they are smart/strong enough not to need Christ or
salvation. Richard Dawkins comes to mind.
Ketman777: Our assumptions, background, bias, etc. are all important when interpreting Scripture. It is humanly impossible
to read without them. What is important is to know what they are and let the Scripture speak about them...
bwbrock2: ... But the passage is obviously addressed to Christians.
crosskritters: you misunderstand me
crosskritters: I'm just saying that when studying an issue in the Bible, you shouldn't begin with the end in mind
Ketman777: oh, absolutely...
Ketman777: You want the plain meaning of the text, but our background et al. is the key to understanding that
bwbrock2 has left the room.
cowboymatt329: right, so anything else here, everyone?
tiggerish44: no
crosskritters: not here
tiggerish44: ]\:-D
tiggerish44: ok look at the time
cowboymatt329: okay...so any prayer requests before we close in prayer?
tiggerish44 has left the room.
crosskritters: my friend Marilyn
tiggerish44 has entered the room.
crosskritters: she hasn't been coming to church
tiggerish44: who?
tiggerish44: sorry I just had to sighn of and on agin
cowboymatt329: okay, we'll be praying for that...anyone else?
Ketman777: all's good here
tiggerish44: pray for choir on monday
cowboymatt329: Okay, will do...
cowboymatt329: Anyone want to close in prayer?
Ketman777: I can
cowboymatt329: Okay, thanks.
Ketman777: Father God, we thank you for this study and the insights into Your Word that you provided. We ask that You
would continue to grow in You and together to form Your Church....
Ketman777: we pray for Marilynn, Lord and ask that You would strengthen her in whatever her situation is and cause her
to remember that there is strength and comfort to be found in the fellowship of Your saints.....
Ketman777: We pray that Austin's choir practice would go well...that You would have Your way in it and work in that ministry
for the advancement of the Gospel and the power of Your kingdom.
Ketman777: Lord, as we continue in the rest of this week, let us remember Your Word and we ask that You keep us safe in
Your arms of Love
Ketman777: In Your Holy Name, I seal this prayer with the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
cowboymatt329: Amen!
crosskritters: amen
